Abstract

In everyday life, batik motifs are a means to learn mathematics. Batik motifs can come from various regions, one of which is Batik Lontara Bugis which comes from the Bugis-Makassar area. This study aims to explore the concept of flat shapes in Batik Lontara Bugis motifs using an ethnomathematics approach so that it can be used to learn mathematics. Using ethnography as a research methodology, data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using triangulation techniques to ensure the validity of the results. The results showed that Batik Lontara Bugis motifs contain the concept of flat shapes such as circles, rectangles, and rhombuses where these concepts are seen in mathematics learning in schools. In addition, this motif contains a cultural philosophy that reflects harmony, togetherness, and respect for customs. The integration of ethnomathematics with local culture not only enriches the mathematics learning process but also strengthens students' cultural identity. This research is expected to contribute to the development of innovative culture-based learning methods while encouraging the preservation of local cultural heritage in the context of formal education.
